This is an exciting time to be joining the Development and Alumni Engagement Team (DAE) at the University of Warwick.

We’re entering the early planning stages of a new major philanthropic campaign, which will significantly scale the ambition for the University’s fundraising and engagement activity. As a team, we have a major role to play in helping break down barriers to education and advancing research addressing some of our planet’s biggest challenges.

Our donor community creates lasting value in society and the economy through supporting students, research and facilities at Warwick.

We’re looking for a motivated individual who will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships that will result in philanthropic contributions to the University.

They will identify, cultivate and manage relationships with donors, aligning the interests of donors with the University’s strategic aims.

Philanthropy Officer

Responsible to Senior Philanthropy Manager

In this important role, you will raise philanthropic gifts from UK and international trusts and foundations, primarily but not exclusively, in support of our upcoming major philanthropic campaign aligned to the Faculty of Arts, the Warwick Arts Centre and student support.

You will be a confident, engaging and enthusiastic fundraiser, responsible for building and maintaining strong, professional and rewarding partnerships with charitable trusts and foundations, including their Trustees and key foundation staff.

Managing a dynamic portfolio of prospects, you will be an excellent writer with the expertise to craft and lead compelling, high-quality proposals to secure a sustainable pipeline of 5/6 figure gifts for the University. You will also ensure the appropriate stewardship of current donors.

Within the University you will be working with world-leading researchers and top-tier educators. You will represent and champion the Department of Development and Alumni Engagement, helping to build visibility, demonstrate impact and help nurture a growing a culture of philanthropy.

Valued and resourced, you’ll be working within a hot-desking space within the Development and Alumni Engagement team on campus, as a colleague within the Warwick Arts Centre, and remotely in accordance with our hybrid working policies.

Principal Accountabilities

Identify, cultivate and develop relationships with potential donors and advocates, including alumni, individuals, corporations, charitable trusts and foundations:

  • Agree individual short/medium/long term strategies and goals with the Senior Philanthropy Manager as driven by the Major and Leadership Giving KPIs
  • Regularly analyse and consult held data to pursue relationships according to strategy
  • Plan and manage targeted events and media campaigns as driven by agreed goals

Execute and contribute to fundraising strategy and actively contribute to increasing the impact and visibility of philanthropy at the University of Warwick:

  • Cultivate and make individual asks for direct financial support
  • Make applications for funding to grant making bodies, working to agreed targets

Maintain a dynamic portfolio of prospects, ensuring appropriate stewardship of current donors and stakeholders:

  • Manage relations with donors to ensure they remain engaged and that any agreements made with them are fulfilled
  • Ensure regular reportage and accountability for donors
  • Maintain the relationship with a donor appropriately thanking the individual and creating opportunities for further support

Work with academics and professional services staff to secure philanthropic donations, by providing specialist advice and insight on philanthropy and donor relations.

Maintain accurate records consistent with good GDPR practice, using standard office procedures.

Person Specification

Previous Experience

  • Be able to demonstrate experience of building and maintaining constructive professional relationships with a wide range of people over an extended period of time.
  • Demonstrate where you have worked collaboratively to achieve a goal, project or contract success.
  • Experience of working in a target driven environment.
  • Previous experience in fundraising/sales-driven environment.
  • Proven experience of client/stakeholder management.
  • Experience of working within a complex work environment.
  • Experience of working with high net worth individuals as donors or volunteers. (desirable)

Knowledge and Skills

  • Emotional intelligence: including self-awareness and the ability to relate interpersonally with people of different interests, cultures and nationalities.
  • Demonstrable listening skills and empathy.
  • Experienced problem solver, with the ability to think creatively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven persuasion and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Practical knowledge of database management and use of standard IT packages (Microsoft).
  • Sound organisational skills.
